Is Green Bay Packers’ Overuse Of Shotgun Formation Causing Inaccuracy?

Percentage of Pass Attempts from the Shotgun Total Pass Attempts Percentage of Pass Attempts in Shotgun Interceptions 2 ESPN play-by-play Green Bay uses the shotgun because it gives the quarterback more time to throw the ball. That’s an essential part of Aaron Rodgers ‘ game: He is constantly trying to keep plays alive. In the shotgun, Rodgers is also able to scan the defensive backfield and use the extra few seconds he gains from being five or seven feet behind center to make more informed decisions about which pockets he can fit the ball into. Some of these passes are brilliant, such as the 62-yard touchdown to Jermichael Finley below. Others, however, get him into trouble. Rodgers has the fifth-best quarterback rating (115.7) when time inside the pocket is less than two-and-a-half seconds, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required). He has only thrown the ball away seven times in 122 attempts in 2013, or six percent of the time. However, Rodgers’ QB rating plummets to 84.6 when he spends more than two-and-a-half seconds inside the pocket. These statistics, of course, do not account for passes he throws when he rolls out of the pocket. But clearly, the longer Rodgers remains in the pocket when Green Bay runs the shotgun formation, the more his accuracy dramatically decreases. Where Rodgers runs into problems is, in spite of having time in the shotgun to get a full view of his open (or covered) receivers, he hates to let a play die.

The Packers-Josh Freeman connection

Packers coach Mike McCarthy wouldnt comment on whether Green Bay might be interested in Freeman but if he was looking for an endorsement from Van Pelt, he got one. I loved Josh, Van Pelt said Thursday. Josh and I had a good working relationship. He was nothing but a pro when I was there with him. He was never late for meetings. We actually had 6:30 (a.m.) quarterback meetings; we were an hour before anybody else, and I never had an issue or anything like that. He did everything that I asked him to do. He was a great teammate, watched him work around the other guys and had a lot of respect for him. I dont know what happened, but I know the guy that I was there with I really enjoyed being with. When asked whether Freeman could still be an NFL starter, Van Pelt said: No doubt. Freeman made his first NFL start against the Packers on Nov.

Lions-Packers Preview

He was at practice early in the week after being sidelined by a concussion sustained Sept. 15 in a 38-20 victory over Washington. Without Lacy, however, the Packers have had a 100-yard rusher in back-to-back games after going the previous 44 without one. “I’m fully aware of how we’re viewed, but the reality is how our offense is implemented in practice and how we train, it starts with the run game,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “Now, the way the games are played has a lot to do with the trend and the flow of the football game. Running the football is important.” James Starks ran for 132 yards against the Redskins and Johnathan Franklin had 103 on Sept. 22, though Green Bay lost 34-30 at Cincinnati the week before its bye. Rodgers’ 105.1 passer rating is among the league leaders, but the Bengals were able to get to him and create mistakes. They sacked him four times and forced him into two of his three interceptions this year, while holding him to 244 yards passing. Rodgers had surpassed 250 passing yards in seven straight games since the Lions held him to 173 in a 27-20 victory Dec.

Lions center wants to moon Packers fans at Lambeau Field

(AP)

The fact that Packers fans moon departing teams makes them even better in my eyes. One person who doesnt appreciate the subtle humor of a well-timed pants-pulldown is Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola. Hes played in the Motor City for 13 years and has never left Lambeau with a victory. Perhaps its because hes been the mooneeand not the mooner? He joked to the Detroit Free Press this week about wanting to change that. Going there I go before the buses go there maybe I should go moon somebody this week on the way there in the car that we take early. /checks NFL coverage map , learns Joe Buck is in Chicago calling the Bears-Saints game. Do it up, Dominic. There will be no one there to chastise you on national television. (AP) Raiola also talked about how seeing someones bare rear-end is the last thing you want to see after a tough loss. Well, usually youre (ticked) off when you leave there because you dont win.

Packers vs. Lions: Basics; take five; tale of the tape

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, defended by Bears cornerback Charles Tillman, catches a two-yard TD from Matthew Stafford last Sunday.

Bush spent the last two years in Miami, and proved he could handle a heavier workload. He’s also a dynamic receiver out of the backfield. He could give the Packers fits. 2.PACKER KILLER: In 11 career games against Green Bay, Lions all-world wideout Calvin Johnson has 65 receptions for 1,062 yards and 12 touchdowns. That’s an average of 5.9 receptions, 96.6 yards and 1.1 touchdowns per game. In Johnson’s last four games vs. the Packers, he’s averaged 7.5 catches and 138.5 yards per game. Big, strong, fast and powerful, the Packers like the rest of the NFL have had no answers for Johnson. Tramon Williams, Sam Shields & Co. will have their hands full again. 3.GOOD MATT, BAD MATT: Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has one of the NFL’s strongest arms and has averaged over 5,000 passing yards the last two seasons.

Double Coverage: Lions at Packers

Rothstein: Though the players and coaches may not make a massive deal about it publicly — for instance, Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford said earlier this week he likes playing at Lambeau Field — there is little doubt how big this win would be for the Lions. A win Sunday gives them an edge to a potential NFC North title, especially since they’ll still have Green Bay coming back to Detroit and would have wins over every team in the division. Bigger than that, itd be a big confidence boost. If Detroit can finally win in Green Bay, the team will believe it can win at any stadium the rest of the way. I know we discussed the streak a bit earlier, but is it something the Packers care about at all? Or have they been so good at home under Mike McCarthy it really doesn’t matter? Demovsky: Rodgers talked a little bit about it this week on his Aaron Rodgers Jersey radio show. All he said is he doesnt want the streak to end on his watch. I think what has his attention — the entire teams attention, really — more than anything else this week is the fact that this is the Packers first division game of the season, and the beginning of a stretch of three division games in five weeks. And right now, the Lions and the Bears have jumped out to fast starts and are ahead of them in the NFC North standing. You saw an NFC North matchup last week when the Lions beat the Bears, and Im sure you’ve studied the Packers some this week.

Qb Watch: Packers’ Aaron Rodgers

Not hearing it: Aaron Rodgers tunes out his critics

08-08-aaron-rodgers

Rewind: Its not often that Aaron Rodgers plays poorly, but his performance in Sundays 34-30 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals might have been his worst since the 2009 road loss at then-winless Tampa Bay. On Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium, Rodgers posted his second-lowest passer rating (64.5) in a game he completed since that loss to the Bucs (57.6) on Nov. 8, 2009, and his lowest in a game he finished since Oct. 31, 2010, against the New York Jets (59.7). Rodgers snapped his NFL-record streak of 41 straight games without multiple interceptions, but one of his two picks was the result of a poor route by receiver James Jones . Rodgers Fast-forward: The Packers have their bye this week. Batted balls: Rodgers quick release means he doesnt usually have many passes batted down at the line of scrimmage, but the Bengals did it three times in the final two minutes on Sunday, including on his last pass on fourth-and-5 from the Cincinnati 20-yard line with 1:25 left. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Rodgers previously had only one game in the past five seasons in which three of his passes were batted down. Prediction: Rodgers will bounce back with a strong performance on Oct.

Aaron Rodgers: the greatest thing since sliced cheese

During a series that ended with a field goal with 6:23 left in the first half, Rodgers appeared to be unhappy with at least one play call from McCarthy and gestured toward the Packers’ sideline. As Rodgers came off the field, he had an intense exchange with McCarthy that was caught on camera and shown on the game broadcast. “I think anytime you get into a situation where there’s a change in rhythm and personnel and play calls, things like that, it’s frustrating,” McCarthy said Sunday. “I had called a certain play in a certain situation, and he was frustrated by it. I feel good. One [disagreement] every three weeks would be awesome.” Added McCarthy during his postgame news conference: “He’s competitive, man. That’s what I love about him. I didn’t really think it was that big of a deal, frankly.” Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji was seen trying to calm Rodgers on the sideline. It wasn’t the first time Rodgers showed frustration with McCarthy during or after a game. Last season at Minnesota, Rodgers confronted McCarthy for throwing the challenge flag on a turnover play that would have been automatically reviewed.

“There used to be the adage that, ‘Oh, I don’t read that stuff.’ That doesn’t exist anymore. Those days are over. And (Rodgers is) probably no different. “He’s aware of what’s out there, and frankly, it’s good business for him to know what’s out there. I understand how the business works. He has a brand that he has established and at some point in his life will be a legacy that he’s leaving. He’s conscientious about that. “But at the end of the day, I think like a lot of young players, someone that’s really as driven as him and somebody that’s used a lot of moments in his past for self-motivation he’s in a really good place.” Building character Rodgers was barely recruited out of high school. Aaron Rodgers has brutal half for Packers, fantasy owners

Sign up now! Aaron Rodgers has brutal half for Packers, fantasy owners Gear Up! Daniel Kelley, SBNation Posted: Sunday, September 22, 2013, 2:48 PM Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst halves of his career in the first half Sunday, completing only seven of his 14 attempts for 64 yards, with no touchdowns. Despite external link that, the Green Bay Packers lead the Cincinnati Bengals 16-14 at the half. The Bengal defense has swarmed Rodgers, and has three sacks at the half. Rodgers has completed passes to five different receivers, but no single guy has more than two receptions. He also has a single rush for two yards. Fantasy impact: Rodgers entered this game without starting running back Eddie Lacy , and lost tight end Jermichael Finley early as well – both guys with concussions. Between those losses and the fact that the Bengals have a strong defense to begin with, it’s easy to understand why Rodgers might have struggled. That said, it’s still Aaron Rodgers, and he still has Jordy Nelson , James Jones , and Randall Cobb. Odds are good he has a strong second half, and odds are even better he’s still the Aaron Rodgers his owners have come to know and love going forward.

Rodgers threw two interceptions, completed 26 of 43 passes totaling 217 yards and threw just one touchdown pass. I wouldnt quite consider this performance $22 million-per-year worthy. There are currently six quarterbacks in the NFL who have a higher completion rating. To rub salt in the wound, those six include Andy Dalton of the Bengals, a team that just defeated the Packers after the cheeseheads scored 30 unanswered points; Tony Romo, who led the league in interceptions last year and one of the biggest laughing stocks in football, Jay Cutler of the infamous Bears. What did Jay Cutler do after winning the Super Bowl? He turned off his Xbox Zing! In all seriousness though, Im impressed Jay 3-0 and leading the NFC North. Rodgers, why arent we up there? Is the weight of the cheeseheads on Rodgers shoulder (pad) too heavy for him to bear? Until this years win against the Redskins, the Packers went 44 straight games without a 100-yard rusher.

Aaron Rodgers Contract: Packers’ QB Reportedly To Earn Highest Salary In NFL History

Now? He’s of the most beloved figures in the state’s rich sports history. The Wisconsin Legislature designated Dec. 12, 2012, as “Aaron Rodgers Day,” and students and workers throughout the state were encouraged to celebrate by wearing his jersey. When he was shown on the scoreboard at the Milwaukee Bucks’ playoff game against the Miami Heat on Thursday, he got one of the biggest cheers of the night. Rodgers will be 36 when the deal ends. He said he thinks he has at least eight years left in his legs and his body, when asked if wondered if this would be his last contract. “A lot of times you don’t see a deal all the way through if you’re playing well. It’s just the nature of some of these contracts. That’s a long way off. In order to even get to that conversation, it’s going to take many years in a row at a consistently high level of play for me, which I expect to do,” Rodgers said.

Packers’ Aaron Rodgers getting used to life without Donald Driver, Greg Jennings

Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 Aaron Rodgers fails for fantasy owners in Week 3 Related In partnership with SBNation.com By Sharona Sports Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers only threw for 244 yards and one touchdown in the Packers’ loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday. Rodgers also threw two interceptions and was sacked four times. Rodgers has a rookie left tackle protecting his blind side and also lost his two starting running backs in James Starks and Johnathan Franklin in the game. The Packers have a bye week in Week 4 and they need it, with running back Eddie Lacy already sidelined. Fantasy impact: The Packers are dealing with issues on the offensive line and and injury at the running back position. Rodgers is an elite quarterback and this game shouldn’t give fantasy owners cause for concern. The Bengals have a very good defense and the best defensive line in the NFL. Lacy should be back in Week 5 which should help the offense. Rodgers is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league and should rebound in Week 5 when the Packers face the Detroit Lions. Rodgers threw for a career-high 480 yards and amassed four touchdowns in a 38-20 win at home without a single interception. According to ESPN Stats & Info , Rodgers became the first player since Y.A. Tittle of the 1962 New York Giants to record 480 yards without throwing any picks and scoring at least four touchdowns. By the end of the first half, he had already collected 335 passing yards . Still, the Green Bay signal-caller didn’t sound fully satisfied. “I don’t think this was my best game,” Rodgers told ESPN . “I’m very happy with the accuracy and the way things went in the passing game, but we definitely have things to work on.” Check out some of Rodgers’ most notable NFL performances below. Aaron Rodgers ties Packers record with 480 passing yards

Aaron Rodgers tied a Packers franchise-record with 480 yards passing on Sunday. (USATSI)

Im aware that Green Bay is ranked 30th in passing defense (359 yards per game), but that was against read-option quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III . Dalton is not that type of QB. Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard If the Bengals want to make this a game, it will take a heavy dose of the running game to keep Rodgers off of the field. With that in mind, I would advise that fantasy owners start both the Law Firm and Gio this Sunday. In Week 1, Cincy ran the ball 21 times compared to 34 snaps in Week 2’s win over the Steelers. Eddie Lacy left last week’s game against the Redskins with a concussion. So, as of Wednesday, Green Bay was still unsure who will start behind Rodgers. In his absence, James Starks filled in and ran for 132 yards and a score on 20 carries. With Cincinnati only allowing 62.5 rushing yards per game this season, I dont think it matters who the Packers trot out there on Sunday, their running back isn’t worth a fantasy start. FANTASY 15 PODCAST Fantasy contributor John Halpin hosts his fantasy football podcast three times each week. When Aaron Rodgers is slinging the rock and the running back situation is in flux, any and all receivers should be in your starting lineup this week. Even with James Starks rushing for 132 yards against Washington, two Green Bay receivers (Jones and Cobb) finished with over 100 receiving yards and Nelson scored twice. As for Cincinnatis top receiver, Green is a must-start Clay Matthews Jersey Youth Xl each and every week.

They cant even get to each another. I mean, how these people get credentials is unbelievable. They let them on the field. They cant even walk over to shake hands with each other. That to me is ridiculous. I wanted to go over and see Robert (Griffin III) after the game, Rodgers said, referring to Redskins at Packers on Sunday. Im going to see him and Im getting bumped out of the way by camera guys. Im literally getting bumped out of the way. And Im just trying to walk in a straight line from where I was at to see Robert. I just think thats too much. Although Rodgers doesnt want to be part of Hard Knocks, it doesnt mean he doesnt watch it. He said he saw the Bengals a little bit on the series this season.

Fantasy Football: Game of the Week Preview

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers took advantage of the Redskins soft zone defense and used a variety of short throws that allowed his receivers to run after the catch. Fast-forward: Its a safe bet that Rodgers is taking the Cincinnati Bengals seriously. In facing the Bengals on Sunday, Rodgers revisits a team that gave him all kinds of trouble in their last meeting, which came in Week 2 of the 2009 season. Rodgers was sacked six times and completed just 53.8 percent of his passes (the eighth-lowest percentage since he became a starter in 2008) in the Packers 31-24 loss at Lambeau Field. More milestones: Rodgers 480-yard passing performance against the Redskins was the third 400-yard passing game of his career in the regular season. Previously, he threw for 408 yards on Dec. 2, 2011, against Denver and 404 yards on Dec. 26, 2010, against the New York Giants . No other quarterback in team history has more than one 400-yard passing game.

Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers finds some television access to be intrusive

Aaron Rodgers is one of them, otherwise he wouldn’t be in the headline, but I’ll let you read on and find out the rest. MVP Projection 1. Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning: Manning didn’t throw seven touchdown passes against the Giants on Sunday, but he was still impressive. In the win over his little brother Eli, Peyton threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Thanks to that performance, Peyton is now the first player in NFL history to throw at least nine touchdown passes with no interceptions through the first two weeks of the season. It seems like the words ‘Peyton Manning’ and ‘NFL history’ are probably going to be used a lot together this year. 2. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers : Rodgers threw for 335-yards and three touchdowns against the Redskins on Sunday — in the first half. Washington obviously didn’t do a discount-double check on its defensive game plan. Rodgers’ 813 passing yards leads the league while his completion percentage (69.3) and yards per attempt (10.29) are both top 3. 3.

Bengals v. Packers: Marvin Jones talks Aaron Rodgers

Wide receiver Jones played for the Golden Bears between 2008 and 2011, when he ranked in the top 8 in catches, yards and touchdowns in Bears history. He finished his career among the schoolas all-time leaders in receiving yards, receptions and receiving touchdowns. Rodgers played for the Golden Bears, too, from 2003-04. Heas the schoolas all-time pass efficiency leader. Rodgers’ 480 yards matched Green Bay’s franchise record, set by Matt Flynn in the Packers’ 2011 regular-season finale. Before Sunday, the highest passing total of Rodgers’ career was a 408-yard performance in a October 2011 win over Denver. Including the win over the Redskins, the 29-year-old quarterback has now thrown for over 400 yards three times in his career. Rodgers’ other 400-yard game was a 404-yard, four-touchdown performance in a December 2010 win over the Giants. Rodgers got ridiculously hot early against the Redskins, throwing for 335 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as Green Bay jumped out to a 24-0 lead. Rodgers almost had four touchddown passes in the first half, but Packers wide receiver James Jones fumbled on the Redskins’ 1-yard line with nine seconds left in the first half. Jones more than made up for his first half gaffe with 11 catches for 178 yards, both numbers were career highs for Jones. Randall Cobb also went over the 100-yard mark for Green Bay, catching nine passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson also got in on the action, catching three passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. The Packers didn’t just pass all over the Redskins either, they also got their ground game going, something that doesn’t happen too often in Green Bay.

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers threw all over the Washington secondary on the day as he went 34 for 42 for 480 with four touchdown passes. Rodgers threw a 35-yard TD strike to Randall Cobb in the first quarter, added two more TD passes to Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley in the second quarter, and finished strong with a 15-yard TD to Nelson in the third. He didn’t score in the fourth, but did enough to hold off the Redskins. Rodgers, who also rushed three times for minus-3 yards, was not picked off in the game and finished with a QB rating of 146.0. Rodgers is up to seven touchdown passes and just one pick this season after two games and has thrown for 813 yards combined in those games. The Packers play at Cincinnati Week 3. Are The Green Bay Packers Ots Prepared To Handle Redskins’ Pass Rush?

A 1.2% Total votes: 497 Both plays still had importance in the scheme of the game, as the Packers were forced to punt on each series that Bakhtiari allowed a sack. But overall, Green Bay had to be impressed with how he handled his 41 pass-blocking snaps in a game against an elite rusher on the road. For as calm as Bakhtiari looked in his first NFL start, Barclay was equally impressive in his seventh (including playoffs). Facing a heavy dose of the powerful Ahmad Brooks, Barclay allowed just three total pressures over 41 snaps and graded out as the Packers’ best run-blocker, per PFF (subscription required). While Green Bay naturally gave Barclay more help on the strong side of the line, he was rarely heard from against a very good 49ers front. A quiet day is usually a good day for Packers offensive tackles. Below is just one example from last Sunday of Barclay taking Brooks completely out of the play. Keep in mind, this shot was taken a full two seconds after the snap, and most receivers are already finishing their routes. The play is deep into its progression, but Brooks is still struggling to gain traction against Barclay. Given all day to throw, Rodgers eventually finds Randall Cobb for a third-down conversion. Brooks (second team All-Pro in 2012) simply wasn’t a big factor in Sunday’s game, due in most part to Barclay’s strong opener. The Packers’ second-year right tackle will need to be as good Sunday against Kerrigan, who is disruptive despite not being the same elite athlete that Orakpo is. Less quick-twitch and more power, the 260-pound Kerrigan can set the edge on the strong side and still collapse the pocket using a variety of pass-rushing moves. Washington Redskins vs. Green Bay Packers NFL Week 2 Preview

He came back in the second half and seemed to handle things a lot better. On the Packers’ four touchdown drives, the no-huddle hummed with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in charge, eating up an average of seven plays and 65 yards on the way to the end zone. And while the time of possession for each drive averaged just under 2 minutes, the effect on the 49ers’defense was apparent. “You could tell they were tired,” backup quarterback Seneca Wallace said. “After some of the drives we had we had some long drives they got tired, especially early for a defense that wasn’t on the field a lot in the preseason. I think Aaron did a great job taking advantage of it.” But the downside to the no-huddle offense is that when it fails to get a first down, the defense is back on the field almost as quickly as it takes them to get off the field from the previous drive. The Packers had five three-and-outs during the game and finished with the fifth highest percentage of drives that failed to get a first down (38.5%) of any team in Week 1. Their time of possession (21 minutes 25 seconds) was the lowest of any team in Week 1. A mental error by Lacy on the first series, tight end Jermichael Finley’s bobbled pass that was intercepted and Lacy’s fumble all contributed to the offense’s short stay on the field and the defense’s quick return. “If you’re able to get more plays and move the football, it’s a big plus,” said Washington coach Mike Shanahan, whose team faces the Packers at noon Sunday at Lambeau Field.

But it wont be easy. The Packers last week limited Frank Gore to just 44 yards on 21 carries (2.1 ypc), and held San Francisco as a whole to 90 rushing yards. 4. But Monday, the Eagles gashed the Redskins for 263 rushing yards, with LeSean McCoy accounting for 184 on 31 carries. The Eagles spread out the Redskins with their formations and limited the number of players Haslett was able to put in the box. But poor tackling was primarily to blame. It was a continuation of the struggles Washingtons defense experienced in the preseason. The Redskins simply have to do a better job of clogging running lanes and wrapping up.

Packers-Redskins: 5 things to watch

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky and ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim break down the key elements to this matchup. Redskins at Packers Football Outsiders looks at why Washington can cover against the Packers. PickCenter Will the Packers beat the Redskins? Demovsky: John, lets get right to perhaps the most closely watched knee rehabilitation in recent NFL history. Youve watched Griffins every move in his comeback from the knee injury. You have chronicled practically every step he has made since, and by now, youve dissected the film of Monday nights loss to the Philadelphia Eagles . What limitations, if any, did he play with? Keim: Griffin did not look the same and showed the effects of not playing in a game in the preseason — and of recovering from major knee surgery in January. Was his knee 100 percent?

Redskins vs. Packers: Five storylines to follow

McCarthy delved into the thought process Wednesday. “We really started this two years ago and kind of have gone in and out of (using) it (the last couple seasons),” McCarthy said. “It really has to do with the growth of our offensive unit, to the personnel, to the collaboration between the players, the ability to play at the line (of scrimmage). You want to make sure you’re giving front page (quarterback) Aaron (Rodgers) as many opportunities as possible.” The aim for the Packers against fellow 2012 division champion Washington is to not only get their first win of the young season but to also get the offense firing on most, if not all, cylinders after enduring some turbulence against the 49ers. “That’s something we talked about, we’ve got to be more consistent, help our defense out a little bit – we lost the time-of-possession battle pretty significantly,” said Rodgers, touching on the 49ers’ having the football for 38 minutes, 35 seconds to the Packers’ 21:25. “That puts a stress on our defense, and we also had four scoring drives over 60 yards. So, it was the good with the bad. You’ve got to clean that up and at least try (to sustain drives) – one first down a series is kind of the bare minimum for us. If you do that, you can semi-change field position. We didn’t do a good job of that (Sunday).” All four Packers touchdowns came in possessions that expended at least six plays and covered no less than 62 yards but consumed no more than 2 minutes, 48 seconds of the game clock.

Packers ‘First Down for Trees’ Program enters fourth season

(AP) – Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews was fined $15,000 for a hit on San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the teams’ season opener. According to the NFL, Matthews was fined “for striking an opponent late.” Matthews drew a personal-foul penalty in the 49ers’ 34-28 win Sunday after he tackled Kaepernick out of bounds deep in Green Bay territory during the second quarter. A fracas between players from both teams followed on the sideline when Matthews and 49ers left tackle Joe Staley began pushing and shoving. Staley received an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty. That offset the late-hit call against Matthews, resulting in a replay of third down at the Packers’ 10-yard line. Kaepernick then connected with Anquan Boldin for a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the 49ers ahead 14-7. The announcement of the fine came Friday afternoon after the Packers completed their post-practice obligations with the media. When he spoke with reporters Thursday, Matthews wouldn’t comment on speculation he would be disciplined for his hit on Kaepernick, who threw for a career-high 412 yards and three touchdowns in the game. “I’m not really going to discuss all that right now, but on to the next game,” said Matthews. The Packers host the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Matthews said he was fined by the NFL one other time for a face-mask penalty he had against Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in 2010, the linebacker’s second pro season.

One last look: Takeaways a must on defense for Packers

For Washington to emerge victorious against the Packers, Griffin III and running back Alfred Morris must overcome their putrid Philadelphia performances. Griffin III was expected to be a little rusty, considering that he missed the entire 2013 preseason. However, Morris performance was the most disappointing for the Redskins. He gained only 45 rushing yards while fumbling twice, which led to 16 Eagles points. If Griffin III and Morris continue to exhibit poor ball control, Washington will have no chance at victory. Green Bay has the incomparable Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. He will look for wide receiversJordy Nelson and Randall Cobb to take advantage of a Washington secondary that features two rookies in free safety Bacarri Rambo and nickel cornerback David Amerson. The Packers also hope rookie running back Eddie Lacy can take advantage of a Redskins defense that surrendered 263 rushing yards to the Eagles. Lacy is a 230-pound bruiser who has the ability to earn tough yards and first downs in an effort to maintain possession for Green Bay. After gaining only 41 yards against the 49ers, the Packers hope Lacy will find running lanes more plentiful against the Redskins.

Outside linebacker Nick Perry was also limited after his neck stinger flared up after Wednesday’s practice. Back-up plan: The Packers’ offense certainly would look much different without Finley. If the toe injury did sideline the starter, Andrew Quarless would see an expanded role. Tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot said Quarless is still working his way back. He missed the entire 2012 season recovering from a torn ACL and MCL. And he also missed two-plus weeks of camp this summer with a quad injury. Against the 49ers, Quarless played eight snaps. “Andrew isn’t quite where he was at one time but we’re steadily getting back there,” Fontenot said. “He’s still regaining strength, and even more than that, regaining confidence back on the field. It’s just going to take reps to get there.” The Packers continue to use Ryan Taylor predominantly on special teams and Brandon Bostick was a game-day inactive in the opener.

Green Bay Packers’ high expectations rest on a defense that’s still a work in progress

Robert Griffin III looked like someone who hadn’t played real football in about a year in the first half against the Philadelphia Eagles , as the Washington offense struggled badly and the defense had no answer for Chip Kelly’s up-tempo attack. Down 26-7 at the half, Washington mounted a nice comeback in the final two quarters, but fell short in the 33-27 loss. Griffin did not look to be 100 percent as he claimed to be, and he seemed understandably more tentative to run than he was last year. The cover was never in doubt for those with a bet on NFL football in that matchup , as Philly closed as a 3.5-point underdog. With both teams starting their seasons 0-1 SU and ATS, there is plenty of pressure to get the ship turned around right away this week. Both teams are considered playoff contenders, but both have their share of weaknesses, as well (Green Bay’s running game, RGIII’s health and both defenses). Those weaknesses were on display in Week 1. The Redskins finished the 2012 regular season on a 7-0 SU and ATS run, and looked a lot like that team in the second half last week.

Green Bay Packers: Running game still stalled

I think that if we continue to play like this I think we’ll win games.” To some, the challenge this week is similar to what the defense faced last week with Kaepernick. Washington’s Robert Griffin III also runs the read-option in coach Mike Shanahan’s offense and is a dangerous scrambler. But to say San Francisco and Washington get things done the same way would be inaccurate, especially when it comes to running the ball. This will be a completely different challenge for the Packers because Shanahan runs the same zone run game that bedeviled the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII and features lots of lateral movement and cut blocks. “This is more a typical Shanahan zone team where the running back is looking for a cutback, looking to hit it downhill,” Raji said. “The 49ers are more of a trap, double-team to the linebacker type of team. “It’s a little different because you still have RGIII as a factor.” If the Packers are going to be a top run-defending team, they’re going to have to show they can plug up holes against a run-scheme that starts out moving laterally as well as they did against one that is full-steam in your face. Keeping RGIII contained will be a key objective, but running back Alfred Morris can be just as dangerous if you don’t account for him. Morris finished second in the NFL in rushing as a rookie last year, compiling 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns on 335 carries. “Downhill,” Pickett said when asked about the 5-10, 218-pound Morris.

Kick returner Jeremy Ross, who fumbled a punt at his 9-yard line that led to a momentum-shifting 49ers touchdown in the playoff game, returned three of seven kickoffs. Because of short returns, poor blocking or penalties, the Packers started those three drives at their 4 yard line, their 22 and their 9. “It wasn’t a great day for us in the kickoff return phase. Decision-making was part of it,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “I thought our kickoff return blocking unit did not do a very good job. We will do a better job of that this week.” And while the Packers’ no-huddle offense scored four touchdowns, the group also had five three-and-out series and turned the ball over twice, leading to a 17-minute deficit in time of possession. “It was kind of feast or famine,” offensive coordinator Tom Clements said. “We had five three-and-outs and two turnovers and then we had four touchdown drives.

Packers defensive front asked to stuff the run

Raji celebrate a fleeting moment of success against the 49ers. (Jeff Gross/Getty Images) GREEN BAY, Wis. The Packers defense went into the offseason knowing it had been carved up by San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the read-option offense in the playoffs, but knowing it would get another crack at two read-option offenses to open the 2013 season. With that in mind, the coaching staff and players spent time trying to figure out the scheme; Green Bay Coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday the Packers had studied video of the Redskins during training camp. But several Packers defensive players said here Wednesday that some of that preparation may have been for naught because they believe Robert Griffin III doesnt look to be the same quarterback he was before he had knee surgery in January. He wasnt running as fast as he used to, defensive end C.J. Wilson said.

Packers’ defense struggles again in 34-28 season-opening loss to 49ers

When it’s second and long, it’s pretty likely to be a passing play that gets called from the sideline. On downs in which the Packers faced second and 7 or more against the 49ers, they threw nine times and ran just three. McCarthy said Lacy has worked on correcting some of the mistakes he made Sunday — most of them related to little things such as picking up clues where his offensive linemen were going and better targeting his blocks on oncoming rushers — and expects him to be better. “Eddie’s had a good couple days,” McCarthy said. “He’s getting more and more in tune with the offense.

Are The Green Bay Packers Better Prepared To Contain The 49ers’ Read-option?

Green Bay Packers: Ted Thompson sticks to blueprint

The wounds from Kaepernick slicing and dicing the unprepared and overwhelmed Packers in the divisional round are certainly still fresh. While not all of his 181 rushing yards came out of read-option looks, Kaepernick still provided the lasting image of Green Bay’s 2012 season when he bolted off the right side of the defense for a 56-yard touchdown in the second half. Linebacker Erik Walden, or the “read” man on the play, was left helpless to stop the play happening in front of him. Once in the end zone, Kaepernick kissed his bicepsa fitting tribute to how easy the 49ers trucked the Packers for most of the night. According to ESPN Stats and Information , the 49ers rushed for 176 of their 323 yards using the read-option. The offense averaged a staggering 11 yards per option play (176 on 16 attempts), while picking up seven first downs and tallying six runs of 10 or more yards. Kaepernick ran seven times out of the read-option and totaled 99 yards (14.1/carry) and a touchdown. 49ers’ Read Option vs. Packers, NFC Divisional Round 49ers 3 Source: ESPN Stats and Information Admittedly, Capers and the Packers had very little exposure to the read-option ahead of the divisional round.Alex Smith was the quarterback during San Francisco’s Week 1 win over Green Bay, and Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks were still evolving on offense in Week 3. Other than a few snaps from the throwing-deficient Joe Webb in the NFC Wild Card round, Green Bay’s defense was still mostly a read-option virgin when it stepped onto the field against the 49ers last January. San Francisco was clever in disguising the look, too. Kaepernick’s ability in the read-option was mostly kept under wraps during the regular season, only to have head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman spring it on the Packers defense in the postseason. ESPN Stats and Information recorded only 26 instances during the regular season in which Kaepernick used the read-option.

“If you don’t, you’re just spinning your wheels.” Look at the 53-man roster that the Packers will take to San Francisco for their season opener Sunday. For the seventh straight year, Thompson has overseen a process that resulted in about 25% turnover from a year ago. There are 14 players on the roster who weren’t on the Packers’ 53 or reserve lists a year ago, up slightly from the Packers’ average of 12.3 since McCarthy’s second season. Of the 14 newcomers, 11 are rookies, one came off suspension, one came off the practice squad and one, Seneca Wallace, came off the street. Safety Chris Banjo attended the Pittsburgh Steelers’ post-draft minicamp in May 2012 on a tryout basis but wasn’t signed. In April, Jacksonville signed Banjo for four months before cutting him July 26, and three days he became the 90th man in Green Bay. Banjo is one of 12 players on the 53 that signed a contract with another NFL team. Wallace is one of only four that has actually made a foreign 53-man roster. Thompson’s cheerful rejoinder is that the Packers usually have more than four, and they did have seven each of the past three years. “Part of that is a credit to our coaching staff,” he said.

Packers’ young offensive tackles expected to play like veterans

If the All-Big 12 offensive lineman from Oklahoma State needed additional motivation, it arrived two weeks ago. This image reflects the Green Bay Packers active roster as of Monday, June 3, 2013 when this image was taken. (AP Photo) Over the weekend, Taylor learned he made the Packers’ 53-man roster. This is a dream come true, Taylor said in a phone interview with The Oklahoman. Since I was a little kid I dreamed about being in the NFL. I am so blessed and so grateful for this opportunity. While ESPN and other media outlets constantly monitor whether quarterback Tim Tebow can land a shot with another NFL team, players like Taylor are the feel-good stories when they survive cutdown day. When I told the Packers I chose to come to their organization Aaron Rodgers Jersey that’s when it hit me I might have a chance to make an NFL roster, Taylor said.

The Packers will be relying on at least one of their three running backs, but specifically rookie Eddie Lacy , to step up and force the 49ers to take the Packers running threat seriously. NFLs Best Quarterback ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski certainly drummed up attention when he commented that Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, (h/t Sports Illustrated ) but even Jaworski ranks Rodgers as the No. 1 quarterback in the NFL . An elite quarterback like Rodgers always gives his team the chance to win any game. While Rodgers is not the running threat that Kaepernick is, he is the most consistent passer in the league. His ability to orchestrate drives typically works even against defenses as strong as the 49ers unit, while he has the arm strength and movement skills to turn any play into a big play. If the Packers are going to win this game, they need Rodgers to play up to his billing as the NFLs best quarterback (and up to his five-year, $110 million contract extension too). Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images The Packers’ success falls very much upon the shoulders of Aaron Rodgers Rodgers played a solid game against the 49ers last season, completing two out of every three passes (26 of 39) for 257 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Still, the Packers never expect Rodgers to be the second-best quarterback on the field, which he was thanks to Kaepernicks performance in that game. The Packers should look to establish a ground game to open up passing lanes for Rodgers, but if this game comes down to the wire, it will be up to Rodgers to make the big plays as a passer to help his team win the game.

Green Bay Packers: Biggest Snubs and Surprises from 53-Man Roster Cut

Coleman, according to Green Bay Press Gazette reporter Wes Hodkiewicz. Less than a half hour later, ESPN’s Ed Werder revealed that the Packers would be signing Seneca Wallace to replace Coleman and be Aaron Rodgers backup quarterback. Wallace, 33, spent most of his career at Seattle, backing up the oft-injured Matt Hasselbeck. Wallace is a 10 year veteran with a career passer rating of 81.3 along with 31 passing touchdowns and 4,808 yards. The quarterback was last on the San Francisco 49ers preseason squad, joining Aug. 22 and asking for his release Aug. 29. Wallace felt he would not get any playing time behind the team’s starter Colin Kaepernick and backup Colt McCoy. The Packers must have heard about the mini-drama taking place in San Francisco, and, needing a backup QB fast, they cut Coleman and signed Wallace.

Pro football: Packers were the right fit for former OSU lineman Lane Taylor

Whatever the case, it’s obvious the Packers aren’t going into this game with Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher protecting the edges for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And they definitely aren’t going up against the New Orleans Saints defense. “There’s really no better way to test yourself than with a group like that, what San Fran offers,” Lang said. “So, we feel good about where we’re at right now. We’re fresh, we’re rejuvenated. “I think we’re excited to get a chance to start a new year, start fresh, and show what we’ve been working on all off-season.” The larger question is whether they can prevent the likes of Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Justin Smith and Ray McDonald from coming around the corner and putting a hurt on Rodgers. And not only that, they’ve got to find a way to run the ball against a team that held opponents to 9.75 points per game in the preseason despite limited playing time from its starters. The one thing the Packers do know is that they were not completely shut down on offense in the two games they played against the 49ers last season. The San Francisco defense dominated far more in the regular-season opener at Lambeau Field than it did in the lopsided divisional playoff game at Candlestick Park on Jan. 15.

Packers’ 53: Home Talent League

Surprise: D.J. Williams, Tight End Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports Based on his career production, it isn’t surprising that tight end D.J. Williams was cut by the Green Bay Packers. He only had nine receptions for 70 yards during his two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. However, the reason Williams’ release is so surprising is because of his youth and upside. Coming into the NFL during the 2011 draft, Williams was viewed as a versatile tight end who could become a rather dominant H-back. Unfortunately, he never saw the field enough and wasn’t a good enough blocker to see enough time on the field to reach that upside. Still, Green Bay giving up on him after only two years is rather surprising. Snubbed: Dezman Moses, Outside Linebacker USA TODAY Sports When outside linebacker Dezman Moses was called upon last year to fill in, he performed rather well. He started seven games and finished the 2012 campaign with 27 total tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble.

Where do you guys get all this stuff? (For the record, ESPN.coms Kevin Seifert was the first to point it out.) “I dont know that thats ever been brought up in a personnel meeting, Thompson added. We dont think about that.” While the raw number might not be intentional in case youre curious, only fullback John Kuhn (nine games with Pittsburgh in 2006) and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (75 games with St. Louis from 2001 through 2005) have seen regular-season action with other teams, although others did spend time with other clubs before coming to Green Bay certainly the ethos behind it is. And Thompsons latest 53-man roster is reflective of that approach. They are Packers through-and-through. Of the 53 players currently on the roster Thompson emphasized that the roster could and likely will change before next Sundays regular-season opener at San Francisco 34 entered the league as Packers draft picks (64.2 percent). Nine more signed with the Packers immediately following their respective drafts as undrafted free agents. Eight of the teams 11 draft picks from this year are on the 53-man roster (Datone Jones, Eddie Lacy, David Bakhtiari, Johnathan Franklin, Micah Hyde, Josh Boyd, Nate Palmer and Sam Barrington) while another, JC Tretter, is on the physically unable to perform list. (Seventh-round wide receiver Charles Johnson was cut but is being signed to the practice squad while the other seventh-round wideout, Kevin Dorsey, is on injured reserve awaiting an injury settlement.) Coach Mike McCarthy amended the teams draft-and-develop philosophy when he spoke to his new players at the post-draft rookie orientation camp in May, telling them that the Packers are now a draft-and-undrafted-and-develop team.

Green Bay Packers Rumors: Joe Mcknight Target After Dujuan Harris Injury, James Stark, Alex Green Risk Roster Cuts As Jets Rb To Try Out

ProFootballZone has already brought up the idea that Starks risked release or trade at some point before the season started. The veteran was the hero of Green Bay’s Super Bowl win, but has not done too much else since then. Starks’ career has been inconsistent, rushing for 578 yards in 2011, but only 255 yards last season while battling injuries. His fall from grace has been steep this season, sitting at the bottom of the depth chart. Alex Green could also see his future cut short.

Green Bay Packers Release RB Alex Green

Packers general manager Ted Thompson drafted 10 players in April of that year. Only three of them receiver Randall Cobb (second round), cornerback Davon House (fourth round) and tight end Ryan Taylor (seventh round) remain on the roster. Tackle Derek Sherrod (first round) will start the season on the physically unable to perform list. He still has not returned from the broken leg he sustained on Dec. 18, 2011. Green was a third-round pick, while Williams was taken in the fifth round. Team Report – GREEN BAY PACKERS

The veteran vying for a backup job went on Twitter Saturday to thank Green Bay for giving him an opportunity and wished the team well this season. Young’s departure would leave just B.J. Coleman on the roster to back up Aaron Rodgers. The Packers planned to officially release their roster moves later Saturday, when teams are required to trim rosters to 53 players. “Thanks to (Packers) for the opportunity … Wonderful fans. Good luck this season,” Young posted. Young’s publicist, Denise White, confirmed in an email that the quarterback had been released. Young struggled Thursday in the final preseason game against the Chiefs going 14 of 30 for 144 yards with two fumbles.

Joe McKnight to work out for Green Bay Packers

Love y’all #faith Broad Daylight (@AGreen_20) August 31, 2013 Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin had previously reported that the team had decided to part ways with the 2011 third-round selection: According to an #NFL source, the #Packers have cut RB Alex Green. Jason Wilde (@jasonjwilde) August 31, 2013 Green appeared in 16 games over two seasons with the Packers. He rushed for 475 yards and added 131 more as a receiver out of the backfield while serving mostly in a backup role. Green’slack of explosiveness didn’t fit the high-powered Green Bay offense well.He did lead the team in rushing during the preseason, but even so, he averaged just over three yards per carry and didn’t do enough to show the team he deserved a spot on the final 53-man roster. As is often the case, it was a numbers game.

Backup QB Vince Young out at Green Bay

The running back was released Monday by the New York Jets after three seasons. McKnight’s preseason was marred by a failed conditioning test, anxiety issues, concussion-like symptoms and a collapse that led to him being carted off the practice field. In other words, a change of scenery probably could do McKnight some good. The Packers are in the market for a running back and returner after DuJuan Harris was lost for the season to a knee injury. The Packers didn’t make any cuts Friday, but they must get to the 53-man limit by Saturday at 6 p.m.

Green Bay Packers work out former Detroit Lions kicker Havard Rugland

After making a surprise cameo appearance of just one possession in Friday’s nationally televised third preseason game, which typically has been when McCarthy keeps his starters on the field into the second half, Rodgers feels his condensed workload this August has been sufficient prep work for the season ahead. “I’ve played a lot of football,” said Rodgers, a ninth-year veteran going into his sixth season as a starter. “I’ll make sure my conditioning is where it needs to be for the first game (Sept. 8 at San Francisco), and we’ll be fine.” The Packers’ downsized first-string offense has been without new left tackle Bryan Bulaga and receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb in the preseason games. While Bulaga is likely headed to season-ending injured reserve because of a torn ACL, Nelson and Cobb have been sidelined because of knee and biceps injuries, respectively. The two playmakers, however, practiced on a limited basis Sunday. McCarthy, in turn, subsequently gave both players a chance to suit up and play Thursday. That’s especially encouraging news for Nelson, who was originally thought to be out for the rest of the preseason after he underwent surgery Aug. 5 to repair recurring nerve damage in a knee. “Jordy and Aaron got an opportunity to work and get some time in individually (Sunday),” McCarthy said.

Midafternoon Packers cuts update

But they also have cut a couple of players who saw significant playing time last season in running back Alex Green and tight end D.J. Williams . Green was their leading rusher last season with 464 yards, and Williams played in 14 of 18 games last season (including playoffs). With a few hours left before teams have to trim their rosters to 53 players, heres the latest list of the players who have been released. Note: This list is a compilation of our own reporting here at ESPN plus reports from the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Packer Report, ESPNMilwaukee.com and players with verified Twitter accounts.

Havard Rugland had his first workout with an NFL team since being released by the Detroit Lions. On Friday, the Norwegian kicker tweeted , “Had a great workout with Green Bay this morning. Thankful for the opportunity.” The Packers remain unsettled at the position. Mason Crosby, who has served as the team’s kicker for the past six years, is coming off his worst professional season. He converted on just 63.6 percent of his field goal attempts in 2012, missing seven of nine from 50 yards and beyond. Crosby agreed to significant pay cut this week, reducing his base salary from $2.4 million to $800,000. He has a chance to make up the difference by sticking on Green Bay’s roster through Week 10 and making 85 percent of his field goals. Rugland, the YouTube sensation, became a national story when he signed a three-year deal with the Lions in April. He was released by the organization on Tuesday and passed through waivers unclaimed. Despite having never worn a football helmet or pads before signing with Detroit, Rugland impressed with his leg strength and accuracy. He converted all three of his preseason attempts, including one from 50 yards. In the end, he was unable to beat out veteran David Akers for the Lions’ job.
